5 Yarns I Recommend for Punch Needle Crafting

Experiment with different sizes of yarn to find the best fit for your project.

I'm having a few problems with finding the right yarn for my projects:

  1. It's easy to find yarn, but hard to find the size I like, so I've bought lots of yarn to experiment with.

  2. I've found some yarns on Amazon and Etsy, but they either want me to buy them as a set or sell single yarn with high prices or shipping fees.

  3. I shop by yarn weight, from 0 to 7, but some brands of yarn have the same weight but different thickness.

I prefer to go to a store to see the yarn in person, but sometimes they don't have the color or size I want. Online stores have more options, but it's hard to tell if I'll like the texture from photos alone.

Overall, I'm trying to find yarns for regular use that won't break the bank, although I'm still willing to spend money to try new yarns (just not as much as when I'm experimenting).

Here are the 5 yarns I like:

1. Yarn Art

I love the thickness of this yarn, which is made from 55% cotton and 45% acrylic. It's not too soft or too hard, and it's great for shaping fonts. Yarn Art offers a wide variety of colors, including neon shades. I even have an example of a project where I used this yarn to punch the fonts.

You can buy a single yarn on Amazon, but it's not cheap. Alternatively, you can buy a set of four yarns with the same color, depending on personal use. Sometimes, I just want one of each color, so I go to Etsy, where they have a wider variety of colors, but you'll need to pay for shipping.

2. Premier® Yarns Cotton Fair™ Yarn

The thickness of this yarn is perfect for shaping detail. It's made of 52% cotton and 48% acrylic. There are only 15 colors available, but all of them are beautiful. I used this yarn for the majority of my black-and-white designs.

3. Gazzal Baby Cotton

This brand offers cute colors and small balls of yarn, which is perfect for use with a punch needle kit and for teaching purposes. The yarn is made of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, and its thickness makes it very easy to shape using the punch needle technique.

4. JubileeYarn Oasis Bliss Yarn

I use a lot of this yarn because it's reasonably priced and has lovely colors. You can also buy a set of six in different colors. The material is 60% acrylic and 20% wool, making it soft to the touch. I'm using it to make earrings because when you trim the yarn, it creates a nice texture. I also used it to make a mug rug, which turned out fine, but I prefer using a firmer yarn for making coasters.

Here are samples of earrings I made using this yarn and a sample of a coaster.

5. Caron Simply Soft Yarn

This brand offers many colors, you can buy a single color or 15 pack with the same color. You may need to buy them online since not all colors may be available in-store. The yarn is made of 100% acrylic, making it soft to the touch, though not as soft as JubileeYarn Oasis Bliss Yarn. It has a weight of 4, but due to its material, it is thinner than other brands' yarns of the same weight.

I will continue to try more yarn and share it with everyone.
